West Virginia is hard on ductwork. Houses sit on hillsides with the mechanical room a level below the living space, older company housing in the coalfields and the panhandle was never built with duct chases, and a lot of the state's commercial work is institutional, industrial or exhaust that no stock catalog covers. Building the fitting to the actual dimension is the only approach that works.

Ductwork for West Virginia houses

The Northern Panhandle, Wheeling, Weirton, Moundsville and New Martinsville, is the closest West Virginia work to the shop and the most like Pittsburgh: brick and frame houses from the 1900s through the 1950s, coal-furnace basements, and equipment replacements that leave the new unit smaller and in a different spot. A plenum built to the new unit, a transition to the existing trunk, offsets around the obstacles and square to rounds at every branch make up most of the order.

Morgantown, Fairmont, Clarksburg and Bridgeport mix university and hospital housing with steep-lot subdivisions where the air handler is in a walkout basement or a crawl space and the trunk climbs a stair wall. Long offsets, elbows with a short straight between them, and reducers that follow the joist bay are the fittings that make those runs work, and the designer lets you set the exact rise and run and see the piece before it is built.

Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg and the Kanawha and Ohio valleys have flatter lots and more postwar housing with single-trunk basement systems. Return boots sized to the existing register openings, round pipe and tees and wyes for branch runs, and end caps for trunk ends are the everyday orders there.

The southern coalfields and the eastern mountains, Beckley, Bluefield, Elkins and the Potomac Highlands, run long heating seasons with a lot of duct in unconditioned crawl spaces. Fittings with continuous seams and sealed connections, insulated properly, keep those systems from losing heat before it reaches the register.

Commercial, institutional and industrial work

WVU and Marshall, the hospital systems in Morgantown, Charleston and Huntington, and the chemical plants of the Kanawha Valley all run laboratory, process and exhaust air in stainless and in gauges the residential charts never list. Kitchen grease exhaust in the state's restaurants is most often a stainless square to round from the hood collar to the fan inlet with a long taper; that page prices it in stainless the same way it prices galvanized.

Coal preparation, natural gas processing, steel and aluminum in the panhandle and the Ohio Valley, and the timber and manufacturing plants in the mountains use heavy-gauge straight duct, large crosses and tees, and end caps for cleanouts. Those are built on the same tables and from the same drawings as the residential work.
