Pennsylvania has some of the oldest housing in the country and some of the most varied. A 1920s twin in Philadelphia, a stone farmhouse in Lancaster County, a company house in the anthracite region and a ranch in Cumberland County all need different ductwork, and none of them are served well by a fitting picked from a stock rack. Ductwork for Pennsylvania's building stock

Western Pennsylvania, from Pittsburgh out to Butler, Washington, Greensburg, Johnstown and Altoona, is retrofit country: basements built for coal furnaces, stone foundations, and equipment replacements that leave the new unit smaller and in a different spot than the old one. Those jobs are plenums sized to the new equipment, transitions to the existing trunk, offsets around whatever is in the way, and square to rounds at every branch takeoff.

Central Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, State College and the Susquehanna valley, mixes newer subdivisions with farm buildings and older borough housing. New construction wants straight rectangular trunk, round pipe and tees and wyes in quantity; the older work wants the same odd sizes the west does.

Eastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, the Main Line, Bucks and Montgomery counties, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, is dense. Rowhouses and twins have no room for a full-width trunk, so flat reducers, shallow elbows and long thin transitions that follow a joist bay are the fittings that make a job possible. Because we build to the dimension you enter, a 24 by 4 trunk is as normal an order as a 12 by 8.

The northern tier and the Poconos, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport, Erie and the lake counties, run heating-dominant seasons with heavy snow loads and a lot of exposed duct in unconditioned attics and crawl spaces. Sealed connections and the right insulation matter more there than anywhere else in the state, and a fitting built with tight, continuous seams is the first step.

Commercial, institutional and industrial work

Pennsylvania's hospitals, universities, labs and food plants need exhaust and makeup air fittings in stainless steel and in gauges the residential charts never list. Kitchen grease exhaust in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh restaurants, laboratory exhaust in University City and Oakland, washdown areas in Lancaster and Berks County food processors: the fitting is usually a stainless square to round or transition with a long taper, and the designer prices it in stainless the same way it prices galvanized.

Industrial jobs across the state, the machine shops and fabricators along the rivers, warehouses along I-78 and I-81, the natural gas and chemical plants in the west, use larger crosses, tees, end caps for cleanouts and heavy-gauge straight duct. Those are made on the same tables, from the same drawings, as the residential work.
