What an offset does
An offset (sometimes called a jog or a double-elbow) shifts a straight run laterally while keeping it running the same direction — the sheet-metal answer to a beam, a joist, a pipe, or a wall that sits right in the path of the duct.
The alternative most crews reach for — bending flex around the obstruction — crushes the flex radius, spikes static pressure, and traps the airflow. A rigid offset keeps the full cross-section around the obstacle.
What to specify
- Width × depth of the duct
- Offset distance — how far the run must shift to clear the obstruction
- Length — the run distance over which the offset happens; longer = gentler bends
- Direction — left/right or up/down relative to airflow
- Gauge and material — 26–20 gauge galvanized, aluminum or stainless
- Connection type at each end
Offset distance vs. length
The ratio of the offset distance to the length sets the angle of the two bends. A big shift over a short run makes steep, turbulent bends; the same shift over a longer run is gentle and quiet. When you order, you set both numbers, so you can trade a little extra length for a lot less pressure drop where space allows — or accept steeper bends knowingly when it's tight.
