Beyond 90 and 45 degrees

Stock elbows come in 90° and sometimes 45°. But duct runs rarely turn in tidy right angles — they follow framing, dodge beams, and tie into equipment at whatever angle the layout demands. A 30° or 22.5° elbow ordered to spec beats two stock 45s cobbled together or a hand-formed guess.

You set the degree of turn directly, so the elbow matches the actual geometry of the run instead of forcing the run to match the elbow.

Throat radius: the airflow lever

The throat radius — how tight the inner corner of the turn is — controls both how much room the elbow needs and how much pressure it costs. A tight-radius (square-throat) elbow fits a cramped cavity but adds turbulence and needs turning vanes on larger sizes. A wide-radius elbow flows better and runs quieter but needs more space.

Because you specify the throat when ordering, you make that tradeoff for your job rather than inheriting it from whatever was in stock.

What to specify

• Width × depth of the duct the elbow serves
• Angle — degree of turn (90, 60, 45, 30, 22.5, or your value)
• Throat radius — tight/square or radiused, to clear obstructions or aid flow
• Hand — direction of the turn relative to airflow
• Gauge and material — 26–20 gauge galvanized, aluminum or stainless
• Connection type at each end

Consistency across a run of identical elbows

On a job with a dozen matching elbows, hand fabrication means a dozen slightly different parts — each varying with the worker and the hour. CNC-cut custom elbows are identical to each other, so they seat the same, seal the same, and install predictably. That repeatability is where ordering clearly beats the brake once quantity climbs.
